Jared Hutchings,   Founder and Managing Director.

Jared Hutchings is the Founding Managing Director of the University Venture Fund, an independent venture fund that belongs to students. Aligning strategic relationships and raising founding capital were all key first steps to creating a strong operating base for the Fund. Starting out essentially as a club at the University of Utah in 2001, Jared transformed the operation into an $18 million venture capital fund with a traditional LP structure that involves students at multiple schools. The educational value of UVF has since increased exponentially as the students have taken on the responsibility of investing real money and reporting to the LPs. Jared is currently responsible for the day-to-day operations of the University Venture Fund, which includes overseeing UVF's operations and sourcing deal flow. In addition, Jared ensures a quality due diligence process, fundraising, maintaining relationships with 20 venture syndicate partners, and leading UVF's group of 60 students (30 in Salt Lake City, 15 in Utah County and 15 at the Wharton School of Business). Jared is also responsible for the national 'University Private Equity Summit', an annual event held in Salt Lake City, UT. This conference, which began in 2004, unites student venture funds and private equity clubs at universities across the country. Jared received a BS in Finance from the University of Utah in 2002. He lives in Salt Lake City with his wife and son.

UVF promotes innovation and entrepreneurship among students by providing a forum for them to be directly involved in venture capital. It is a collaboration between students seeking an entrepreneurial education and professional venture capitalists. Students themselves research start ups and acts as eyes and ears of venture capitalists to search out high tech and consumer trends with potential. Many of the budding businesses they research and back are founded by entrepreneurs who are the students own contemporaries. The enthusiasm and insight students bring to the venture capital asset class is appreciated at the highest level of the industry.
